Did people really call quizzes "pop quizzes" in the 1990s?

Just wondering, because whenever I watch movies from the late 80s or 1990s, I often see people refer to school quizzes are a "pop quiz". Why did they call them that? It's funny, because that among many things you see on TV tells me people were into really cheesy humour then.

Actually, there is more than one kind of quizz. A scheduled quiz is just called a quiz. An unexpected quiz was called a pop quiz back to the 1960's. I am unable to vouch for anything earlier than that.

Well as you may know, a "pop" quiz is a surprise quiz. And in 80s movies, it was the thing to do I guess? I guess they thought that that was a struggle in school.

No they were very real. A " pop quiz" just meant that it was a surprise.

Teacher would walk in (my math teacher I had in 8th grade was great for this ) and say clear you desk pop quiz.

Or a few of teacher if the class was being loud and not paying attention the would say okay clear you desks pop quiz. And use it as a punishment.

I never had a pop quiz when I went to elementary school in the 90s, I guess they were considered too harsh or something. Though I'd never call a regular quiz a pop quiz.
